Bengal is one of the traditional provinces of undivided India. Pabna is the name of a district in Bengal consisting of 20
districts. The history of this district suggests that the area of the "Poud" nation, which belonged to the Pawandra state,
was estimated to be from the land of Pundra Vardhan, and the present Pabna district was named after Pabni, one of the
forerunners of the Pabni Ganges.
Before 1220 Pabna was included in Rajshahi district. Later, in 1220, a section of Rajshahi district was divided into the
present Pabna district. First, Pabna district was created with the eight upazilas of Khetupara, Mathurapur, Raiganj and
other districts of Pabna district, Dharmpur, Madhupur, Kushtia and some of the later districts of Pangana which are
now under Rajbari district.
The Jamuna River was declared the boundary of Pabna district on the 5th. For the convenience of administrative work,
the Silajganj upazila on the west of Jamuna was amalgamated with Pabna as the district increased in the area. Pangsha
thana was connected with Goalanda sub-division of Faridpur district and Kushtia sub-division of Kumarakhali thana river
in Pabna in the year.
Thus, the southern boundary of the district is designated Padma. Until the 5th, the district of Pabna was with the Pabna
Sadar subdivision and the Sirajganj subdivision. From that time onwards Pabna and Sirajganj became known as two
separate districts. Presently, Pabna district is made up of Pabna, Ishwardi, Atgharia, Chatmohar, Faridpur, Sujanagar,
Barra, Santhia and Bhangra districts.
